What is a Slump Cone

Types of Slump Cone Funnels
Slump cone funnels are available in aluminum, stainless steel, and custom designs to suit different job requirements. Aluminum funnels are lightweight and easy to handle, while stainless steel options offer added durability for harsh environments. Selecting the right funnel ensures better efficiency, precision, and long-term performance for any concrete testing application.
Plywood Funnel Design
A plywood funnel is a simple tool used in fine homebuilding and construction projects to fill piers with concrete, blocks and other materials. The design is to create a curved or tapered shape so you can pour concrete from buckets without spilling on the sides of the blocks.
To build, you will need:

1/2” or 3/4” plywood

Jigsaw or circular saw for cutting the plywood

Drill press or hand drill for drilling holes

Wood screws or nails for assembling the funnel

Waterproof glue or sealant for sealing the edges
The funnel should fit over the blocks snugly, with the curved cutouts allowing to pour concrete. The plywood ears into the block cells should be sturdy enough to hold the funnel in place. This way you can pour concrete accurately and efficiently, with minimal waste and better quality of your construction work.
Plywood Funnel
Using a funnel is a common practice in construction projects, especially when building walls, floors and piers. The funnel for quick and neat concrete pour, the vertical rebar for additional support and stability to the structure.
To use a funnel, follow these steps:

Prepare the site by laying out the blocks and vertical rebar according to the project plans.

Place the funnel over the blocks, snug fit.

Pour concrete into the funnel, using a bucket or pump to fill the blocks.

Use a level and trowel to make sure the concrete is evenly spread and blocks are in place.

Let the concrete set and cure according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

When working with concrete and filling piers, always take necessary safety precautions to avoid accidents and injuries. Wear gloves, safety glasses and dust mask when handling concrete and materials. Keep the work area clean and clear of debris and be careful when lifting heavy objects or working at heights. Follow proper installation procedures for the hopper, pipe and other components to ensure a safe and stable system. Be aware of the risks associated with vertical rebar (sharp edges and entanglement) and take measures to mitigate them. Also consider the importance of proper concrete mixing ratios (see “What are the Correct Concrete Mixing Ratios - Ratio Chart”) to get a strong and durable foundation.
