The Los Angeles Abrasion test, also known as LA Abrasion test for short, is widely used as an indicator of aggregate quality. The test measures degradation of standard gradings of aggregates subjected to abrasion and impact in a rotating steel drum containing an abrasive charge of steel balls. Up to twelve balls are used, depending on gradation of test samples.

The Los Angeles (LA) Abrasion Machine design has integrated safety features with user controls on the outside of the built-in sound enclosure. An electrical interlock allows the machine to operate only when the double-hinged lid is closed and a safety key is inserted. No moving parts are exposed during operation.  Drum is positioned for loading and unloading using a jog button while watching through a viewing window in the enclosure. The 1in (25mm) thick steel shelf of ASTM “preferred design” extends the width of the drum. A wear-resistant shelf of hardened steel is optionally available. Sound is absorbed by the heavy, painted steel enclosure with sound attenuating foam and membrane lining.

A 1hp electronically controlled gear-motor rotates the drum at 30—33rpm via enclosed chain drive. Drum assembly rotates in flanged ball bearings with dust seals and grease fittings. Controller console with overload protection has large JOG and On/Off push button controls, and automatic counter stops rotation after a preset number of revolutions. Abrasive charge of twelve hardened steel balls 46-48mm in diameter and 390-445 grams are included.

The Gilson HM-70A Los Angeles Abrasion Machine is a top-quality product designed for the widely recognized Los Angeles Abrasion test. This test is commonly used to determine the quality of aggregates by measuring their degradation when subjected to abrasion and impact. The machine features an integrated safety design with user controls conveniently located on the outside of the enclosed structure.

Safety is a top priority with this machine, as it only operates when the double-hinged lid is closed and a safety key is inserted. During operation, no moving parts are exposed, ensuring maximum safety for the user. The machine allows for easy loading and unloading of samples through a viewing window in the enclosure, and it comes with a 1-inch thick steel shelf that extends the width of the drum. For added durability, a wear-resistant shelf of hardened steel is also available as an optional feature.

The drum of the Los Angeles Abrasion Machine is rotated by a powerful 1hp electronically controlled gear-motor, which operates with a slip-clutch protected chain drive. The drum assembly rotates smoothly in flanged ball bearings with dust seals and grease fittings to ensure longevity and ease of maintenance. The machine also features an overload protection controller console with large jog and on/off push button controls. Additionally, an automatic counter stops the rotation after a preset number of revolutions, providing accurate and consistent test results.

Included with the machine are twelve hardened steel balls, measuring 46-48mm in diameter and weighing between 390-445 grams. These balls are essential for the abrasion test and ensure accurate and reliable results. The machine meets various test methods, including AASHTO T96, ASTM C 131, and ASTM C 535, making it suitable for a wide range of applications.

With its excellent safety features, convenient user controls, and high-quality construction, the Gilson HM-70A Los Angeles Abrasion Machine is a reliable and efficient tool for conducting the Los Angeles Abrasion test. Its exceptional performance and durability make it the ideal choice for anyone in need of precise and consistent results in aggregate quality testing.
