When the sampler is raised, the valve closes, trapping any sediment and liquid inside. The second tip, the "core catcher tip," uses a disposable plastic soil catcher that captures the material as the sampler is pushed into the sludge.
The specialized top cap of the sampler is an important component of the kit. It features a viton rubber flap cap that opens during deployment to allow excess air and water to escape through oversized vent holes, thus preventing pressure buildup.
